The design concept was to create a more open, sunny home, increase living space, update the kitchen and master bath and increase storage. The client lives in Florida part of the year and wanted a space with a more “Florida” feeling yet in a style more suited to the Midwest.
The interior designer suggested and designed a sunroom addition to the home with an addition to the kitchen. The designer created a space that doubled the cabinet storage, added an island and a peninsula bar area. The ceilings were raised and a maple veneer beam was created and installed to match the cabinets. The designer included skylights in the sunroom area. The materials include slate tile, wood beams and trim, granite countertops and accent lighting. The space was transformed from a basic 1945 kitchen to an inviting, contemporary kitchen with light, high ceilings, and spectacular finishes. The views are on three sides for maximum sunlight.
The Sunroom was an addition to the rear of the home, suggested by the designer. The room is surrounded by glass on three sides with sliding doors and skylights for maximum sun exposure. The space has a radiant heat floor and connects to the kitchen (separated only be a peninsula).
The master bed and bath suite was added above the existing garage and connect to the home via a new stair. As part of the master suite, a large walk-in closet with a center island was added. The center island was included as the clients requested a dressing room with private access to the bathroom. Fiber optic lighting is included under the toe-kicks of the cabinets and is activated by motion. There is recessed incandescent lighting in the ceiling for general lighting, decorative lighting over the vanity mirror, and fiber optic up-lighting in the cabinets for ambient lighting. This is a safety feature. A telephone is included in the toilet area and is at a height that is easy to reach in the event of a fall. The shower has grab bars on one side that are hidden from the main view. The tub has grab bars and a seating area for easy access in and out. The shower includes a bench for seating, multiple shower heads, and a spray system and is large enough for two people. The bedroom was color coordinate to work with the bath.
