Living/Dining Room Remodel Dramatic Fireplace Glen Ellyn, IL

Our client desired to update their home and better utilize the space for relaxing and entertaining. We completely transformed the living space by designing a tall fireplace backdrop in charcoal grey and re-cladding the stone with granite complement the space. We had the existing large dark wood-framed brick fireplace that was overwhelming in the space replaced with a new, white fireplace surround with clean lines and granite firebox/ hearthstone.

Built-In bench seats add storage and casual seating at the windows drawing the space inward to create a cozy atmosphere. Scone lighting adds to the dram and an interest. We replaced the heavy draperies with a fresh-looking treatment with embroidered linen fabric and decorative bronze rods.

We reversed the room layouts of the Living Room and Dining Room so that the dining room is now more easily accessible from the kitchen and living room is more private and has a better traffic flow.

We kept the Wedgewood Blue sofa in the Living Room connecting the two rooms with this color as the common thread. We chose to paint in a ‘greige’ color – a cross between beige and grey as a soft backdrop for the cozy family get-away. We selected iron sconces to coordinate with the iron chandelier in the dining room adding drama to the fireplace.  Incorporating new can lights to wash the walls of the fireplace with soft light adds drama and allows for lighting control. As a finishing touch, we added accessories and rugs for a warm, cozy feel.

In the Dining Room, we designed wood ceiling beams in a pattern aligning with the windows to mimic the Tudor style of the exterior adding dimension and impact. On the walls of the dining room, we chose a textured metallic wall covering that provided the perfect mix of beige and metallic silver to connect the rooms on the first floor of the home. The walls create a stunning visual as they glisten in the light.

Rooms rarely used are now used daily by the homeowner- their quality of life has been improved and their joy increased!
